For a drug to move safely from discovery through clinical trials, dosage formulation and into manufacturing, significant regulatory requirements must be met. Once available on the market, products must continuously be monitored to ensure safety and efficacy for patients. Working with Johnson & Johnson to ensure high quality and safety in the manufacturing process is supplier Pharma-Bio Serv, a Hispanic, woman-owned company in Dorado, Puerto Rico. This diverse company provides technology transfer and compliance services to the pharmaceutical, medical device and biotechnology industries in the United States, Puerto Rico, Latin America and Europe. Johnson & Johnson has worked since 1993 with Pharma-Bio Serv, a supplier that shares in Johnson & Johnson’s commitment to health care providers and the patients they serve. Pharma-Bio Serv is regularly involved with Johnson & Johnson in the commercialization and optimization of products, processes and procedures as well as on compliance initiatives that are critical in supporting the control systems needed to guarantee product safety, integrity and quality. President and CEO Elizabeth Plaza operated the company as a sole proprietorship until its incorporation in 1997. In an unusual twist, Plaza became a patient in need of one of the very medications her company helped transfer to the Janssen Ortho manufacturing facilities in Gurabo, Puerto Rico. When Plaza was diagnosed with diverticulitis, a condition that requires immediate treatment with potent antibiotics to prevent potentially life-threatening complications, Dr. Jorge Cortés from Hospital HIMA San Pablo in Bayamon, Puerto Rico, elected to treat Plaza’s condition with Levaquin®, a quinolone manufactured by Janssen. “I had full confidence in the quality, effectiveness and safety of this product, as it is one of many we helped Janssen transfer to its manufacturing facilities,” Plaza said. Johnson & Johnson provides numerous products used by Hospital HIMA San Pablo. “We are very proud to have Johnson & Johnson as our client, since our relationship and our contributions have helped us grow as a minority woman-owned company while also contributing to job creation for our local economies,” Plaza said. “We currently support manufacturing companies around the globe,” she added. “I am grateful to Johnson & Johnson for their confidence in our capabilities. That support, combined with the value we add to their supply chain, helped us transform my company into a leader in our business.” Today, Pharma-Bio Serv is a strong regulatory compliance and validation company, with more than 170 experienced professionals who contribute significantly across many healthcare companies. The company has earned numerous awards and recognitions—including, most recently:
- FederalMinority Business Enterprise Center (MBEC) with the Exporter of the Year Award—2009
